The Better Community Club and Residence Life and Housing organized the third annual Martenitsa Workshop on Feb. 24. The purpose of the event was to introduce AUBGers to the Bulgarian tradition of celebrating the coming of spring. About 40 AUBG students and members of the Youth Empowerment Initiative made martenitsi, which are now on sale at the reception desks of Skaptopara I and II. Bela Geneva, the founder of the Better Community Club, explained that “the money raised will be donated to the elderly home in Kocherinovo.” The special guest, Mrs. Kuncheva, told the legend of the first martenitsa and showed the craft of making white-and-red ornaments. Two AUBG students also gave a tutorial on preparing martenitsa bracelets. The participants tried their own skills to the sounds of Bulgarian folklore music. Winners of the “Most Creative Martenitsa” competition were Odmaa Narantungalag and Yavor Kiryakov.
Bela Geneva, one of the organizers of the Martenitsa Workshop, helps Ilko Drenkov's daughter tie up a martenitsa. | Students learn how to pull the strings for different colored martenitsas from each other . | So, what goes where now? | This year's Martenitsa Workshop gathered more students than the years before. | The organizers set two jars on the table for donations. Later, they were moved to the front desks of both Skaptoparas, so that every student can buy one for a suggested minimum price of 50 stotinki. | | | |
