Photo by Milena Penkova, Photoillustration by Spasimir Dinev Spring Artfest, Choir’s 15th anniversary, the “Chicago” musical, Aernout Van Lynden’s debut on stage, traditional exhibitions, and student performances are the cultural highlights of the next 40 days. Fine Arts professors and students shared their plans with Verve. The Spring Artfest 2008 started with a March 23 performance. “The first concert is the one with a duo from the U.S., Basso Moderno, performing together with a Bulgarian jazz pianist and composer,” said Music Professor Geoffrey Dean. Another concert, also a part of the Artfest, will take place on April 29. The performers are the Ardenza Trio playing together with Professor Dean, and a group of improvising dancers led by choreographer Mila Iskrenova. Music Professor Anna-Maria Ravnopolska-Dean is preparing the traditional Applied Music Class concerts with her students from piano and harp courses. She is also working on organizing anniversary concerts of Herbert von Karayan, the well-knownAustrian conductor, and Maria Kalas, a famous opera singer. Ravnopolska-Dean wants to have a performance by Velislava Nikolova, a renowned soprano singer. The repertoire will include opera pieces and solo recitals by the professor. Music Professor Hristo Krotev is working on the 15-th anniversary concert of the AUBG Choir that will take place on March 31. The Blagoevgrad performance will mark the beginning of a small tour that will continue in Plovdiv on April 4 and Sofia on April 16. Another performance, in Nis, Serbia, is planned for next semester. Theater Professor Nedyalko Delchev and his students are working on several plays this season. The first play, “Guards! Guards!,” directed by junior Sijka Doneva, brings on stage Journalism Professor Aernout Van Lynden and Delchev himself. Based on a Terry Pratchett novel, the play will feature a number of on-stage special effects, including a Chinese dragon. The performances are scheduled for April 7 and 8 in Blagoevgrad’s Chamber Opera Hall The other projects in progress are a night of national theater scenes by Beginning Acting Class, “Romeo and Juliet” in Bulgarian, and a drama by David Mamet, “Sexual Perversity in Chicago.” AUBG senior Alena Kunilava is working on Alla Sokolova’s “Faryatiev’s Fantasies,” a drama about a dentist, his weird dreams and unshared love. The play will be performed in Russian on April 16 and 17 in the Theatre Chamber Hall. The musical “Chicago” will be presented at AUBG by Eva Pillossof. “The audience can expect an unforgettable performance by thirty brilliant individuals who I promise you will entertain you for two hours,” Pillossof said. The performances of the independent production start on April 10 and will continue every night until April 13 in the hall of the Chamber Opera in Blagoevgrad. The 11th annual More Honors Ceremony will take place in the Peyo Yavorov Hall on April 18. Two days of voting, on April 15 and 16, will precede the student-run show. Drawing Professor Issay Penchev is going to organize the traditional end-of-semester exhibition of the works from his two art classes. This time, the opening is scheduled for April 25.
