The campaign for SG President and Student Representative to the Board of Trustees officially started at midnight of Saturday, April 5. Meet the two presidential candidates.

Girogi Mariamidze

Junior Giorgi Mariamidze, BUS and ECO, Georgia

  • Student representative to the Student Services committee for the 2006-2007 academic year
  • President of the economics club for the 2006-2007 academic year
  • SG treasurer since fall 2007

His team: Edlira Dashi (currently a Resident Assistant) - Vice President

Teodor Stoev (member of the SG budgetary committee) - Treasurer

Intends to:

  1. “Continue improving the reputation and accessibility of the SG among the student body at large.”
  2. “Continue improving relations between the SG and the AUBG Administration. By encouraging cordial relationships between individuals in both institutions, the students’ interests can be served most effectively.”
  3. Edlira Dashi plans to improve the student representative system by encouraging stud reps to communicate with students.
  4. Teodor Stoev wants to “work closely with the clubs’ presidents to reassess their necessities,” to ensure the club funding is “easier and more efficient.” He will also support big events like the Olympics, More Honors and AUBG Debate Open as they are crucial to the university’s image.

Why Giorgi is different: “WE are different from the other team, because we're running as a team. You can see from Lika's posters that his slogan is "I care." We have consistently made clear that this is a team effort for us.  We have very clear priorities, which you can read in our letter of intent.  It's not about me, it's about us--"us" being both my team and AUBG students as a whole.  That's why we're in this, after all.  We are in the best position to serve the students and we are going to work as a team to do this.”

Vasile Valcov

Junior Vasile “Lika” Valcov, BUS, Moldova

  • SG senator since spring 2007 and currently the chair of the Student Representative Selection Committee
  • Member of the SG budgetary committee during spring 2007 semester
  • Vice-chair of the SG starting fall 2007
  • Liaison to the office of Vice President for Finance and Administration Alexander Alexandrov for 2006-2007 academic year
  • Liaison to the office of President David Huwiler since fall 2007
  • Resident Assistant starting fall 2007

His team: Vaska Dimitrova (currently a student representative to the Student Outcomes Assessment committee and Student Services committee) – Vice President

Leorand Ndoni (SG senator) - Treasurer

Intends to:

  1. Properly channel student complaints about the faculty to “influence the administration”
  2. Improve the student representatives system.
  3. Restructure the AUBG website: add features such as letting students check their account balance and informing AUBGers about Career Center opportunities, make the site more “useful and attractive to prospective students”
  4. Strengthen the relationship between the AAA and the university

Why Lika is different: “My team shares a clear vision of how we want to structure the SG – on three pillars: teamwork, communication and cooperation. We have more overall SG experience compared to our opponents. Moreover, we have known and worked with each other before. I'm proud to be working with these people by my side.

I believe the SG president must be a leader above all. A leader who is able to make decisions as an advocate of students and not of his own interest. A leader who will listen and consider the opinions of others, including those of his team. Moreover, the SG president should be able to inspire, motivate and guide his team to success. I believe I am MORE of all these things, and that is what makes ME different.”

The elections will take place on Monday, April 21, time and location to be announced.
