Computer network interruption was the main point on the Student Government (SG) agenda on Wednesday, September 24. Lachezar Filchev, the Head of the Office of Communications and Computing (OCC), and Ann Ferren, the University Provost, attended the meeting. Filchev said that it is hard to keep the network flawless, because “the infrastructure is big and complex.” He also pointed out that there is not enough information coming from students. Additionally, there is no way for the OCC to find out about problems with the network occurring during the weekend or after OCC working hours. Filchev proposed the development of a mechanism that would notify OCC in case of any network interruptions. Provost Ferren said that, according to her experience, AUBG campus is not the worst example of network failures. She said that instead of seeking a perfect system, the priorities should be to fix and prevent short interruptions. Several senators and the two Student Representatives to OCC have been appointed to come up with a solution. The second main point of the meeting was an SG proposal for setting up four special boards for club information and advertising. That would reduce clubs' printing charges. The Budgetary Committee already started cutting club advertising budgets by only approving poster funding for the first two meetings of the clubs that applied. Another issue was the recognition of several new clubs. SG also set senators to work with Steven Sullivan, Dean of Faculty, on the possible changes of the registration process. After one freshman SG candidate invited students to free beer during the debates, senators also came up with new and stricter guidelines for future candidates. The guidelines’ approval was delayed for the next SG meeting in order to discuss Professor Robert Phillips’ comments on the issue.
